Chinese Numerology

It is said that if life is a complex equation, the Chinese numerology can help solve it. The concept of numerology has its origin during the time of Pythagoras in ancient China. Chinese numerology has a deep significance in their cultural beliefs. They believe that numbers have a great magical quality. The numbers can affect human life and destiny.

It will not be wrong to point that Chinese culture is based on superstitious beliefs and practices. They give a lot of emphasis on the use of numbers. People pay a large amount of money for numbers that are considered lucky and auspicious.

They generally invest such amount for their residence floor, bank account number, driving license number, street address etc. Superstitious beliefs and practices form an integral part in Chinese culture.

The Chinese culture groups certain numbers as auspicious or inauspicious according to sounds in Chinese language. Numbers like six, eight and nine are considered as luck numbers in Chinese culture. This is because sounds of these numbers resemble the sounds of words that have positive meaning. The numerical number six symbolized happiness and it is considered good for business purpose in Chinese culture. The number eight is associated with Buddhism and it carries the meaning of lotus flower of eight petals. The "eight" sound corresponds to the word, which means wealth, or prosperity in Chinese culture. An amazing fact is that a telephone number with all the digits in eight was sold @ USD $270,723 in China.

The number nine is historically related with the emperors of China. The number is used in robes of the emperor having nine dragons. It is often used in Chinese weddings and the sound resembles the word "long lasting" in Chinese language. Chinese numerology considers the number seven as the luckiest number of all the other numbers. It symbolizes "togetherness" and is a number for "relationships". The number is considered as auspicious both in the Chinese as well as western culture.

Numbers like four, five, six and seven are taken as unlucky numbers in Chinese culture. Numbers like four stand for an unlucky number because the sound of it corresponds to the word "death" in Chinese language. The Chinese always prefer dropping the number four in any of their products. A fine example for this is that there is no series that begins with four in "Nokia cell phones". The five number carries a negative i.e. "No" in Chinese language. However, the meaning can be changed if the number goes together with a negative number like four. The combination of the two negative give the meaning of "no death" or "no die" in Chinese language.

The Chinese associate the number six to the meaning of failure like "decline, drop and fail". Seven is the number that associates with the superstitious power like ghost and spirits. In the Chinese calendar, the seventh month of the year is called as ghost month. It is said that the gates of hell is opened and the ghost and spirits are allowed to visit the living world.

Numerology in Chinese is also associated with elements like wood, fire, earth, metal and water. The study of numerology has become widespread in Chinese culture.
